July 2025 NEWS
Grant News
* ME Research UK announced in June 2025 it has funded Dr. Sarah Annesley’s Lab at La Trobe University to study MicroRNAs in Platelets of women with Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
Dr. Annesley said in the press release, “Our early research has found that certain microRNAs are altered in people with ME/CFS –and some of these changes are in microRNAs that control the expression of proteins related to energy production and platelet function.
“In this new project, we’ll study blood samples from women with ME/CFS and compare them to healthy controls to look for differences in microRNA profiles. We’ll also test whether these changes in microRNAs can actually cause changes in platelet activity and energy production using cellular models.”
Researcher Interviews
Recently, Dr. Alain Moreau was interviewed about MicroRNAs by Dr. Eleanor Stein, MD FRCP.
The MicroRNA news in Summer 2025 briefly is that:
* Dr. Alain Moreau has 6 papers under review, including the paper that used his MicroRNA protocol on LongCovid patients to stratify LC patients and identify which LC patients are developing Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Other papers include DNA methylation, and the resubmission of two Long COVID papers with markers that can predict who will remain sick from the first recruitment visit, and who will recover.
*Presentation at InvestInME Conference in May. Discovery of a biomarker that predicts severity in ME/CFS that was replicated in an independent Norwegian cohort. The biomarker can explain why more women patients are affected.
* Tested 403 cases of ME/CFS since 2015, 80 something controls, and 60 Long COVID patients.
* Future Forward: Someone has received a Frontier grant to develop rapid MicroRNA testing that could be used on our phones. It is still in the proof of concept stage.
* Journey from research lab (bench) to clinical setting (bedside) is complicated. It requires funding from the private sector or philanthropists to help develop MicroRNAs into a ME/CFS diagnostic blood test. Dr. Moreau is looking for a serious business partner to help make an 11-microRNA test a reality.
